What do I need to configure to allow a hosted app to open a pdf in a separate adobe window?

I have an inventory/invoicing application hosted through Winflector.  The app stores .pdf files of receipts, etc, and users can click on a link in the app to open and view these files in adobe reader.  This works fine locally, but when hosted through winflector, clicking on the link causes a white box to appear in the upper left of the screen for a few seconds and disappear.

Adobe reader 32 bit is installed, and I'm able to run it through winflector as well.  This behavior only occurs when attempting to open a .pdf file by clicking on a link in the hosted app.

Please disable the protected mode for  Acrobat Reader (Edit/Preferences/Security (Enhanced)/uncheck ‘Enable Protected Mode At Startup’).  This must be done for all Windows accounts used for running Acrobat Reader via Winflector.

I have the same issue except that I am using Adobe DC READER 64 bit.

I have Winflector 3.9.9.2 installed.

Not sure what you mean by "This must be done for all Windows accounts used for running Acrobat Reader via Winflector."  I let the default to use the windows account on which the Winflector server is running.

As far as I know I only use one windows account with winflector setup.

Thanks.

Bob

Also, I set up Adobe DC Reader (64 bit) as a program and was unable to run it via windlector client.  It appears that it did open the program on the server but nothing ever dislayed on the winflector client.

If you have winflector authentication you have to disable "Protected Mode At Startup" only on the one account  - only for user who starts and operates Winflector server.

Please send us winflector server logs: c:\Winflector\server\applogs

Bob,

I now have this working.  Here's what I had to do:

  • Change to 32 Bit Adobe

  • Edit registry to disable "Protected Mode at Startup" for all users

  • Have each user sign in to the server and set their default program for .pdf files to adobe.

More information:

Change to 32 bit adobe.

I couldn't get Adobe DC reader 64 bit to run via the winflector client, but when I downgraded to 32-bit, I was able to get it to run.  Once I knew I could run the program remotely, then it was time to try to get my primary application to open adobe.

Edit registry to disable Protected Mode at Startup

Adobe gives you an error, something about an appcontainer, if you don't do this.  However, Adobe also likes to re-enable the feature even after you disable it.  To force this option to be turned off for all users, edit the registry using the instructions under "Locking Protected Mode" found at this website:

https://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/AppSec/protectedmode.html

Set each user's default PDF program

It turns out the white box I was initially seeing when trying to open pdfs was a failed attempt to display the "choose which program to open this file" dialog box.  (Winflector's applog showed an attempt to run "openwith.exe").  So, each user of your application needs to have their profile on the server configured to open pdf files with adobe reader.  There are some ways of doing this through group policy, but it was easier in my case just to have each user sign in to the server via RDP and change the setting manually.  It only needs to be done once per user.
